Stay Safe on Country Roads

As the weather improves and the roads fill with adventurers and weekend riders, it's more important than ever to ride safe and stay alert, especially on country roads. These routes offer beautiful scenery and thrilling rides, but they also carry unique dangers. Let's all do our part to keep the roads safe.

Key Safety Tips

Stick to the Speed Limit – Ride to the Conditions

Country roads can be deceptive. Tight bends, blind corners, and changing surfaces mean that even within the legal limit, speed can become unsafe. Always ride at a speed where you can stop safely if something unexpected happens.

Watch for Uneven Surfaces and Debris

Potholes, loose gravel, mud from farm vehicles, and fallen branches are common hazards. These can cause a serious loss of control on two wheels. Scan the road ahead and slow down if the surface looks uncertain.

Group Riding – Keep It Tight, But Safe

If you're riding in a group, stagger your formation and avoid bunching up. Agree on clear signals and re-group safely, not in the middle of a bend or junction.

Be Prepared for the Unexpected

Hidden junctions, livestock, tractors, and walkers are all part of the countryside. Ride with the mindset that a hazard could be around every corner.

Wear the Right Gear

Full protective clothing, including high-vis or bright colours, can make a huge difference – not just in visibility, but in protecting you if the worst happens.

Rest and Stay Hydrated

Fatigue and dehydration slow your reaction times. Take regular breaks, especially on long rides.
