Conviction secured against man who attacked another man with broken glass

We have secured a conviction in court against the man who seriously injured another man after smashing a glass into his neck in Cannock.

Robert Grainger, 41, of Wolverhampton, admitted wounding / inflicting grievous bodily harm in court on Monday (16 June).

It happened on 29 April outside the One Stop shop on Longford Road. Grainger and the victim, a man in his 30s, are seen on CCTV speaking to each other, resulting in a confrontation. Grainger, who was holding a glass, smashed it into the victim’s neck, causing a deep laceration. Grainger walked off after it happened, leaving the victim with significant injuries in the street.

The victim managed to walk to a family member’s house. They called 999 after seeing his injuries, where the victim then went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to hospital.

Thankfully, he has since been discharged from hospital, but suffered life-changing injuries. His left arm is now paralyzed and he is still undergoing medical treatment at various hospitals.

Detectives linked Grainger to the case after trawling CCTV and arrested him on 3 May. He had an injury to the hand that he was holding the glass in.

Grainger has been remanded ahead of his sentencing on 21 August.

Chief Inspector Al Lyford, from the Cannock local policing team, said: “This was a particularly violent incident which caused a great deal of concern in the local community.

“Local officers worked quickly to investigate this incident and to build a case file against the offender, resulting in the conviction.

“Violence of any kind will never be tolerated and we will act robustly against those responsible.”
