Dog safety in hot weather

As temperatures rise across Staffordshire, we’re urging all dog owners to take extra precautions to keep their pets safe during hot weather.

🐾 Walking Dogs in the Heat

Avoid walking your dog during the hottest part of the day, typically between 11am and 3pm. Choose early morning or late evening walks.
Hot pavement can burn paws — if it’s too hot to touch with your hand for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog.
Carry fresh water, rest in shaded areas, and monitor for signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.

🚗 Dogs Die in Hot Cars

Never leave a dog in a parked vehicle — even with windows open, the temperature can rise dangerously in minutes.
A dog can suffer heatstroke or die in as little as 15 minutes.
 

❗ What to Do If You See a Dog in a Hot Car

If the dog appears in distress (heavy panting, collapsed, unresponsive), call 999 immediately.
If not in immediate danger, call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
Do not attempt to break the window yourself. While well-intentioned, this can be classed as criminal damage and may lead to prosecution.
