Dear Residents,

As the evenings draw in and the nights become longer, I would like to remind everyone of the importance of staying vigilant and taking extra precautions to keep your homes and neighbourhoods safe. The transition to darker nights can unfortunately provide more opportunities for criminals, but with a few simple steps, you can help protect your property and loved ones.

Why Are Darker Nights a Concern?

With reduced daylight, it becomes easier for opportunistic thieves to operate unnoticed. Burglaries and thefts often increase during the autumn and winter months, as criminals take advantage of the cover of darkness. However, by working together and remaining alert, we can reduce the risk and keep our community secure.

Essential Home Security Advice

To help you stay safe, we recommend the following practical home security tips:

Lock all doors and windows: Always ensure that doors and windows are locked, even when you are at home. Don’t forget to secure sheds, garages, and outbuildings.

Use timer switches for lights: Set lights to come on automatically when it gets dark. This gives the impression that someone is home, even if you are out.

Keep valuables out of sight: Avoid leaving valuables such as keys, wallets, or electronic devices near windows or doors where they can be easily seen.

Install outdoor lighting: Motion-activated lights around entrances and driveways can deter potential intruders.

Check your alarms: Make sure your burglar alarm is in good working order and use it whenever you leave the house.

Maintain your property: Trim hedges and trees near windows and doors to eliminate hiding spots for criminals.

Don’t advertise your absence: If you’re going away, ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property and collect post or deliveries.

Look Out for Each Other

We encourage everyone to look out for neighbours, especially those who may be elderly or vulnerable. If you notice anything suspicious or unusual in your area, please do not hesitate to report it.
