VEHICLE SECURITY IN COLD WEATHER

With temperatures falling across the region, many drivers leave their vehicles idling or unattended while warming them up—creating prime opportunities for theft. As cold weather sets in, take steps to keep your vehicle secure.

Tips to Prevent Vehicle Theft in Cold Weather

Never leave your car running unattended: Even for a quick warm-up. Cold mornings are peak times for “warm-up thefts.”

Use remote start wisely: If you have it, keep the vehicle locked and ensure it cannot be shifted into gear without the key.

Keep keys and fobs away from entry points: Cold weather can increase indoor use of remote starters; store fobs away from doors and windows to prevent relay-signal theft.

Lock doors immediately: Even when scraping ice, loading gear, or stepping away for a moment.

Remove valuables and bags: Visible items can attract smash-and-grab thefts.

Park in well-lit, populated areas: Thieves target cars in dark or isolated spots.

Use an anti-theft device: Steering-wheel locks, kill switches, or GPS trackers add deterrence and increase recovery chances.

Don’t leave spare keys in the vehicle: Thieves commonly check sun visors, center consoles, and cup holders.

Stay alert, stay warm, and take a few extra steps to keep your vehicle protected during the cold-weather season.
