đź’› Restorative Justice in Action đź’›
As it’s RJ Week, we wanted to share an anonymised real-life case study which showcases the impact and process of Restorative Justice.
A tragic car crash took the life of a young man. His mother, deeply affected by his loss, wanted to understand the impact the incident had caused and ask the person responsible about the choices made that day.
Through Restorative Justice (RJ), she was able to:
âś… Receive honest answers to her questions
âś… Gain a clearer understanding of what happened
âś… Experience a sense of closure and a shift in feelings toward the person responsible
Support was provided throughout by charities such as Brake and RoadPeace, alongside professional guidance. Meetings were carefully facilitated to ensure safety and respect for everyone involved.
Although the offence was serious, RJ created space for healing, helping the victim cope with her loss. She expressed gratitude for the honesty shown, and although forgiveness wasn’t immediate, she no longer saw the person as “bad” and gained insight into her son’s last moments.
Restorative Justice doesn’t erase the past—but it can transform pain into understanding, giving victims a voice and fostering accountability in a way that can support long-term healing. | ||
