Suspicious Cold Callers & Door-to-Door Sales |
Your local police have received recent reports of suspicious cold callers and unregistered door-to-door sellers operating in the area. We are reminding all residents to remain vigilant and to report any concerning activity.
✔ Always check ID: Legitimate representatives from utilities, councils, charities, or businesses will carry proper identification. Ask to see ID through the door or use a door chain. If unsure, close the door and independently verify their identity using a trusted phone number (not one they give you). ✔ Never feel pressured: Cold callers should never make you feel rushed, pressured into buying something, or uncomfortable. You are under no obligation to speak to them or let them in. It is perfectly acceptable to politely decline and close the door. ✔ Protect your home: Keep front and back doors locked, even when at home. Do not leave valuables or tools visible outside—these can be a target for opportunistic thieves. Consider using a door chain, spyhole, or video doorbell to help identify callers safely. ✔ Look out for neighbours: Please keep a particular eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours who may be more at risk from rogue traders or scammers. If you notice unfamiliar individuals going door to door, especially if their behaviour seems suspicious, please check in on neighbours if safe to do so. What to Report ; Immediately contact police if you notice: Callers refusing to leave when asked Vehicles or individuals acting suspiciously Aggressive or inappropriate behaviour Attempts to enter homes without permission Where possible, provide descriptions of individuals, clothing, vehicle details, and direction of travel. If a crime is in progress or someone is at risk, always call 999. For non-urgent concerns, use 101 or your local online reporting service.
