BIRD FLU ADVICE |
In recent weeks there have been a number of cygnets pass away at Stonydelph lakes that prior to dying were seen to display symptoms of Avian flu. The birds were unfortunately taken by either good natured people or other wildlife so were unable to be tested by Defra (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) to confirm cause of death.
There has since been a confirmed outbreak at the nearby Kingsbury Waterpark. Given the close proximity it is highly likely that some of the birds around Stonydelph and Belgrave lakes have been effected.
To reduce the risk of this potential bird flu spreading we recommend people follow this guidance: Stick to footpaths and please keep dogs on leads. Avoid touching or picking up dead or sick birds. Don’t handle feathers or any surfaces that may be contaminated by droppings. If you keep poultry or other birds at home, please wash your hands and clean/disinfect footwear after your visit. If you do spot any dead birds in the vicinity, please report them via the DEFRA service online (see link above), or by calling 03459335577.
