|
It has been reported that a large amount of empty gas canisters have been found in the alley way to the rear of Louise St, Burslem.
It is believed that they have been used by young people to get an illegal high.
Staffordshire Police are actively targeting the illegal possession and supply of nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") following its classification as a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 in November 2023.
Legal Status and Penalties: Possession of nitrous oxide for "wrongful inhalation" (recreational use) is illegal. Unlawful possession can lead to an unlimited fine, community punishment, or a caution.
Supply Penalties: Those involved in the supply or production of nitrous oxide for illegal, psychoactive effects can face up to 14 years in prison.
Public Safety Warnings: Police have warned of the serious health risks, including nerve damage and paralysis, and have urged parents to speak to young people about the dangers.
Driving Offences: Staffordshire Police treat driving under the influence of nitrous oxide as a serious offence, with one case resulting in a driver being jailed for 15 years and 8 months for causing a fatal collision while using the substance.
Residents are encouraged to report illegal, anti-social, or suspicious activity via 101, Live Chat on the Staffordshire Police website, or anonymously to Crimestoppers. | ||
