Staffordshire Police received a report on Wednesday 18th February 2026 that between 14:00 - 14:30 an unknown white male approx 20s, approached a vulnerable adult outside an address in Portland Place, Cannock stating the person owed a substantial amount of money for their Vodafone bill and telling the person to pay the bill now. The male had no ID badge but was carrying a folder. The male has left the location when the person returned to their property but stated they would return tomorrow. 🚪 Before You Open the Door
• Only expect visitors if pre-arranged. If someone knocks unexpectedly, you do not have to answer. • Keep back and side doors locked before opening the front door. • Use a peephole, window, intercom, or video doorbell to check who is there before opening. 🕵️ Recognise the Red Flags
Be cautious if someone: • Claims they noticed urgent damage to your home. • Offers a “today only” special deal. • Pressures you to decide immediately. • Cannot provide proper identification. • Refuses to let you verify their company independently.
🧠 What to Do If Someone Calls
• Ask for identification and verify it by contacting the company using a number you find yourself. • Do not let strangers into your home unless you are completely sure who they are. • Say “No, thank you” firmly — you are under no obligation to engage. • Never make on-the-spot decisions, sign contracts, or hand over money.
💳 Protect Your Money and Information
• Never give out bank details, PIN numbers, or personal information. • Never pay cash on the doorstep. • Never go to the bank to withdraw money for someone who comes to your door. • Consider setting up a password scheme with your utility providers.
🚨 What Police or Banks Will Never Do
• They will never ask for your PIN, bank card, or to withdraw money. • They will not send someone to your home to collect cash or verify account details.
If this happens, it is a scam.
📍 Extra Safety Tips
• Display “No Cold Calling” signs. • Keep a record of suspicious callers (description, vehicle, time). • Share this advice with neighbours, especially elderly or vulnerable residents.
📞 Reporting Concerns
• Call 999 if you feel in immediate danger. • Call 101 to report suspicious activity. • Report fraud to your national fraud reporting service if money has been lost.
Staying cautious and taking your time can prevent most doorstep scams. When in doubt, do not engage and contact the authorities for advice. |
