As we move into spring, many of us start planning home improvements—unfortunately, this is also the time rogue traders become more active. These criminals often target homeowners with doorstep scams, claiming urgent repairs are needed to roofs, driveways, or gardens. They pressure residents into quick, cash‑only decisions, carry out poor‑quality work, or disappear entirely after taking large upfront payments.

🚨 Be Alert: Common Warning Signs

“Urgent Repairs Needed”
They claim your roof, chimney, guttering, or driveway is dangerous and needs immediate—and expensive—work.

“We’re Just in the Area”
They say they have leftover materials from a nearby job and can offer you a “special deal.”

Cash-Only Requests
They refuse bank transfers or card payments and avoid giving written quotes, invoices, or receipts.

High-Pressure Tactics
They create a sense of panic, pushing you to agree before you can think, research, or ask for other quotes.

Lack of Professional Details
No branded vehicle, no verifiable business address, and only a mobile number that’s often switched off later.

💡 Protect Yourself

• Never agree to work from someone who cold-calls at your door
• Avoid paying large sums upfront—especially in cash
• Always get at least three written quotes from reputable companies
• Check traders on trusted websites like Checkatrade, TrustMark, or Buy With Confidence
• Display a “No Cold Calling” sticker to deter doorstep scams
• Always ask for ID and verify credentials (e.g., Gas Safe, NICEIC) for relevant work
