Local update re: Homeless Encampment/Knutton Ln |
||
|
Dear Residents,
We are aware of ongoing concerns raised regarding the homeless encampment located off Knutton Lane. Reports have included allegations of foul language, anti-social behaviour, public defecation, and suspected drug use. We understand the impact this may be having on the local community and want to provide an update on the action being taken.
Staffordshire Police are working in partnership with the local authority to address the situation. As the land on which the encampment is situated is privately owned, responsibility for taking action to remove the occupants rests with the local authority and the landowner, rather than the police.
A formal notice has now been served to those residing at the encampment. This notice provides a legal requirement for the occupants to vacate the land. Should they fail to comply, enforcement action may be taken. This can include the landowner or local authority seeking possession of the land through the courts, after which authorised enforcement officers can lawfully remove individuals and their property. These steps are governed by civil law, including powers under legislation such as the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 and relevant trespass laws.
The local authority’s Rough Sleepers Team is also actively engaging with the individuals at the site, offering support, advice, and assistance in finding alternative accommodation and services.
While Staffordshire Police do not have the legal powers to remove individuals from private land in these circumstances, we will continue to respond to any criminal offences. If you witness drug use, threatening behaviour, or any activity that causes fear or alarm, please report this to us. These matters can be investigated and dealt with appropriately.
We appreciate your patience and understanding while partners work together to resolve this situation.
