Increase in THC Vape Use Among Young People |
||
|
Staffordshire Police are issuing this alert following an increase in reports and intelligence relating to the use of THC vapes by young people within local communities, parks, town centres, and surrounding school areas.
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive substance found in cannabis. THC vape devices and cartridges are commonly marketed in colourful packaging and may appear similar to standard nicotine vapes. These products are often sold illegally through social media, messaging apps, or unofficial suppliers.
We are increasingly concerned about the risks associated with these substances, particularly amongst children and teenagers. Risks Associated with THC Vapes.
THC vapes can pose significant health and safeguarding risks, including: Anxiety, panic attacks, and paranoia Hallucinations and psychotic episodes Increased heart rate and breathing difficulties Loss of consciousness Addiction and dependency Exposure to unregulated or dangerous synthetic substances.
Recent national studies have also identified illegal cannabis vapes containing synthetic cannabinoids, sometimes known as “Spice”, which can have severe and unpredictable effects.
Legal Position: Under UK law, cannabis and THC-containing products are controlled substances and are illegal to possess, supply, or produce without lawful prescription authority. Cannabis is classified as a Class B drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Possession of cannabis or THC vape products may result in: Arrest Community resolutions or youth interventions Criminal records or cautions Prosecution
Supplying or sharing THC vape products is a far more serious offence and can carry significant custodial sentences.
While prescribed medical cannabis products do exist in limited circumstances, recreational THC vapes sold online, through social media, or via informal sources remain illegal in the UK.
We encourage parents and carers to: Speak openly with young people about the dangers and legal consequences of THC vapes Be aware of unusual vape devices, packaging, or sweet/fruity odours Monitor online activity and purchases where appropriate Report concerns relating to drug use or supply
Staffordshire Police will continue to work alongside schools, local authorities, youth services, and partner agencies to safeguard young people and tackle drug-related harm within our communities.
