Cold Water Safety Warning

Following a recent tragic death, please be aware of the serious dangers of entering cold water.

Cold water can have a rapid and dangerous effect on the body, even for strong swimmers. Sudden immersion may lead to:

Uncontrollable breathing and panic

Rapid exhaustion and loss of coordination

Afterdrop (continued fall in body temperature after leaving the water), which can lead to collapse even once out

Within minutes, cold water incapacitation can make it difficult or impossible to stay afloat or swim.

Key safety advice:

Avoid entering cold water unexpectedly

Do not jump or dive into unknown waters

Enter slowly and carefully to allow your body to adjust

Wear a suitable buoyancy aid where possible

Never swim alone

Know your exit points before entering the water

Call 999 immediately if someone is in difficulty

Stay safe and look out for one another.
