Open Water Swimming Risks
While open water may appear tempting during this hot weather, Staffordshire Police are urging people to avoid swimming in quarries, lakes, canals, and other unsupervised bodies of water, as hidden hazards can pose serious risks. It is especially important for parents and guardians to talk to their children about the dangers of open water. Teenagers in particular may be more likely to venture out with friends and underestimate the risks involved in using open water to cool down, which can have serious and potentially tragic consequences
Open water swimming can be extremely dangerous—even for strong, confident swimmers. Unlike controlled environments like pools, natural bodies of water (rivers, lakes, seas) present unpredictable hazards that can quickly become life-threatening.
Cold Water Shock - Sudden immersion in cold water can cause: Involuntary gasping (risk of inhaling water) Rapid breathing and panic Increased heart rate, which can lead to cardiac arrest in extreme cases Cold water shock can occur in water temperatures below 15°C—and can incapacitate you within minutes.
Anybody who witnesses people swimming in quarry pools is urged to contact Staffordshire Police immediately via 999. | ||
