Staying safe in the hot weather |
||
|
With temperatures rising, it's important to take extra care to protect yourself, your family, and vulnerable neighbours from the effects of hot weather. ✅ Stay hydrated Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid excessive alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks, which can contribute to dehydration. ✅ Keep cool Stay in the shade where possible, especially between 11am and 3pm when the sun is strongest. Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and a wide-brimmed hat if spending time outdoors. ✅ Protect your skin Apply sunscreen with a high SPF and UVA protection. Reapply regularly, particularly after sweating or spending extended periods outside. ✅ Look after vulnerable people Check on elderly relatives, neighbours, and those with health conditions. Ensure they have access to water and a cool environment. ✅ Never leave anyone in a parked vehicle Temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly, even with a window slightly open. Never leave children, vulnerable adults, or pets unattended in a car. ✅ Be aware of heat-related illnesses Symptoms of heat exhaustion can include dizziness, headaches, excessive sweating, nausea, and weakness. Move to a cool place, drink water, and seek medical advice if symptoms do not improve. ✅ Take care with outdoor activities If exercising or undertaking physical work, try to do so during the cooler parts of the day and take regular breaks. ✅ Prevent fires Dry conditions increase the risk of grass and woodland fires. Dispose of cigarettes responsibly, avoid using disposable barbecues in unsuitable areas, and report any fires immediately. Let's all enjoy the sunshine safely and help protect those who may be most vulnerable during the hot weather. Staffordshire Police | Working together to keep our communities safe 🚔☀️ | ||
