Electric bikes and the law

🚲 SMART ALERT – ELECTRIC BIKES AND THE LAW 🚲

We are seeing an increase in the use of electric bikes across our communities. Please make sure you know the law before riding.

A legal electric bike (EAPC) must:
✅ Have pedals that can be used to propel it
✅ Have a motor with a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts
✅ Can be propelled up to 15.5 mph if its been approved but must STOP providing motor assistance at 15.5mph (25km/h)
✅ Be ridden by someone aged 14 or over [gov.uk], [gov.uk]

If an electric bike does not meet these requirements, it may be classed as a moped or motorcycle. In that case, it may require registration, insurance, a driving licence and an approved helmet. Riders could also face enforcement action and the bike may be seized. [gov.uk], [gov.uk]

✅ Ride responsibly and consider other road and path users
✅ Ensure your bike complies with UK regulations [gov.uk]
