Neighbour Disputes – Know Who to Contact 🚨

We understand that issues between neighbours can sometimes be frustrating and stressful. Many disputes can be resolved through calm communication, but it's important to know which organisation is best placed to help depending on the issue.

🏡 Neighbour Disputes – What Can You Do?

If you feel comfortable and safe to do so, try speaking with your neighbour first. Many problems arise from misunderstandings and can often be resolved through a polite conversation.

📞 Who Should You Contact?

🔊 Noise Nuisance

Persistent loud music, parties, barking dogs, DIY noise, or other ongoing disturbances should be reported to your local council's Environmental Health Team.

Keep a diary of incidents if possible.

🚗 Parking Issues

Vehicles parked legally on a public road are generally not a police matter.

Obstructive parking, abandoned vehicles, or parking enforcement issues should be reported to the local council.

If a vehicle is causing a dangerous obstruction, contact the police via 101.

🌳 Boundary, Fence, Hedge or Property Disputes

These are usually civil matters between property owners or tenants.

Citizens Advice, mediation services, landlords or housing providers may be able to assist.

🐕 Animal Complaints

Dangerous dogs or animals posing an immediate risk should be reported to the police.

Barking dogs and general animal nuisance should be reported to the local council.

🏠 Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) Examples include:

Repeated harassment or intimidation

Criminal damage

Drug-related activity

Persistent disorderly behaviour

Report ongoing ASB to your housing provider or local council. If a crime has occurred, report it to the police.

🚔 When to Contact the Police

Please contact the police if: ✅ A crime has been committed
✅ There is a risk of harm to someone
✅ Threats, harassment, assault, or criminal damage have occurred
✅ There is an emergency or immediate danger (call 999)

For non-emergency police matters, contact 101 or report online.

Neighbour mediation services can often help both parties reach an agreement without the need for formal action. This can be a quicker and less stressful solution for everyone involved.
