With the hot weather expected to continue over the coming days, we would like to remind residents to take extra care to keep themselves, their families and vulnerable neighbours safe.

🌡️ Staying Safe in Hot Weather

Please remember to: ✅ Drink plenty of water and avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
✅ Stay in the shade where possible, especially between 11am and 3pm when temperatures are highest.
✅ Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and use sunscreen.
✅ Keep homes cool by closing curtains and blinds during the hottest parts of the day.
✅ Look out for elderly relatives, neighbours and those with underlying health conditions.
✅ Never leave children, vulnerable adults or pets in parked vehicles, even for a short time.

🏊 Open Water Safety

As temperatures rise, many people may be tempted to cool off in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, canals and other open water locations. While these may look inviting, they can be extremely dangerous.

⚠️ Open water can be much colder than it appears, even on hot days.
⚠️ Sudden cold-water shock can affect breathing and swimming ability.
⚠️ Hidden currents, underwater obstacles and changes in depth can pose serious risks.
⚠️ Reservoirs, quarries and canals can be particularly hazardous.

If you choose to enter open water: ✅ Only swim in designated areas where swimming is permitted.
✅ Never enter the water alone.
✅ Avoid alcohol before or during swimming.
✅ Enter the water slowly to allow your body to adjust to the temperature.
✅ Keep children under constant supervision near water.
