Rogue Traders Operating in the Area

Due to recent reports in the area, Staffordshire Police is reminding residents and local businesses to remain vigilant of traders who offer property maintenance work and then increase their prices after the work has begun.

These individuals may approach properties unannounced, claiming to have noticed an issue with roofing, guttering, driveways, fencing, gardening, or other exterior works. Whilst some traders may appear professional and convincing, concerns have been raised where residents have been asked to pay substantially more than originally quoted, often under pressure and with little opportunity to seek independent advice.

How To Protect Yourself

Be cautious of anyone who cold calls at your home or business offering services.

Never agree to work on the spot. Take time to consider your options.

Obtain at least three quotes from reputable and established companies.

Ask for a written quotation and ensure all costs are clearly detailed before work begins.

Verify business details, reviews, and references where possible.

Be wary of claims that repairs are urgently required without supporting evidence.

Avoid making large upfront payments.

Discuss significant work with a trusted friend, family member, or neighbour before committing.

Warning Signs Of Rogue Traders

Unsolicited doorstep approaches.

Pressure to make an immediate decision.

Claims that the offer is only available "today".

Requests for cash payments.

Refusal to provide paperwork, receipts, or business details.

Demands for additional money after work has started.

General Crime Prevention Advice

Keep doors and windows secure, even when at home.

Use door chains, spy holes, or video doorbells where available.

Do not allow unknown callers into your property.

Ask for identification from anyone claiming to represent a company or organisation.

Look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours who may be targeted.

Report any suspicious activity, vehicles, or individuals in your area.

Reporting Information

If you have been approached by a trader and are concerned about their behaviour, or if you believe a vulnerable person may be at risk, please report this to Staffordshire Police via 101. Always call 999 if a crime is in progress or there is an immediate threat to life or property.
