With the recent spell of hot and dry weather, the risk of wildfires across Staffordshire has increased significantly. Fires can spread quickly through grassland, woodland, parks, and open countryside, posing a serious risk to people, wildlife, property, and the environment. Staffordshire Police is urging residents and visitors to stay vigilant and take simple precautions to help prevent wildfires and keep our communities safe. How Wildfires Can StartMany wildfires are caused by human activity, often unintentionally. Common causes include: Discarded cigarettes, matches, and smoking materials. Disposable barbecues. Campfires and fire pits. Glass bottles left in open spaces. Fireworks and sky lanterns. Deliberate fire-setting and anti-social behaviour. During periods of hot, dry weather, just one spark can ignite vegetation and quickly develop into a serious fire, particularly in windy conditions. If You Discover a Wildfire☎️ Call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service. When reporting a fire, please provide: The exact location, if known. The size of the fire. Whether people, homes, vehicles, livestock, or wildlife are at risk. Any other information requested by emergency services. ⚠️ Do not attempt to tackle a large fire yourself. Move to a safe location, keep well away from smoke and flames, and follow any advice given by emergency services.
