Smart Alert: Off-Road Bike and E-Bike Crime Awareness

We are reminding residents about the ongoing issues caused by the illegal and anti-social use of off-road bikes, scrambler bikes, motocross bikes, modified motorcycles and electric bikes (e-bikes) on public roads, footpaths, parks and open spaces.

The unlawful use of these vehicles can cause significant nuisance to local communities, create safety risks for pedestrians and road users, damage public spaces and, in some cases, result in serious injury.

Parents and guardians are asked to consider the legal implications before purchasing certain bikes for children and young people. Many off-road bikes and some modified or high-powered e-bikes are not road legal and cannot be ridden on public highways, parks, playing fields, footpaths or other public land.

Modified e-bikes that do not comply with UK regulations may be classed as motorcycles or mopeds in law, requiring registration, insurance, taxation, an appropriate licence and safety equipment. Using these vehicles illegally could result in police enforcement action, including:
