As we move into the autumn and winter months, the days become shorter, the nights become longer, and unfortunately opportunities for criminals can increase. We would like to remind our rural residents of some simple but effective steps you can take to help protect your property, vehicles, livestock and yourselves during the darker months ahead.

🌙 Lighting & Security Around Your Property

Many rural homes and farms are in isolated locations, making them attractive targets for opportunist offenders.

✅ Ensure external lighting is working correctly and consider installing motion-activated security lights around vulnerable areas.

✅ Check that driveways, entrances, sheds, garages, workshops and outbuildings are well illuminated.

✅ Trim back hedges and vegetation that may provide hiding places for intruders.

✅ Lock doors, windows, gates and outbuildings, even when you are at home.

✅ Consider CCTV, video doorbells or alarm systems to provide an additional layer of security.

✅ If you're away from home, use timer switches on internal lights to make the property appear occupied.

🚗 Road Safety During Darker Nights

Autumn and winter bring darker evenings, poor weather conditions and an increase in hazards on rural roads.

⚠️ Slow down and allow extra time for your journeys.

⚠️ Be aware of mud on country roads from agricultural vehicles.

⚠️ Watch out for wildlife, particularly deer, which are often more active at dawn and dusk.
