Beware of "New Number" Scam Texts and Messages

Staffordshire Police are warning residents to be vigilant following reports of scam messages claiming to be from a son, daughter, family member or friend who has supposedly changed their phone number.

📱 How the scam works: You may receive a text or WhatsApp message saying something like:

"Hi Mum, I've got a new number. Please save it."

After gaining your trust, the sender will claim they have an urgent problem, such as a failed bank app, unpaid bill, or broken phone, and ask you to transfer money on their behalf.

⚠️ Warning signs: • Unexpected message from a "new number" • Requests to keep the conversation private • Urgent requests for money • Pressure to act quickly • Requests for bank transfers

✅ How to stay safe: • Always contact the person using their old number or another trusted method to verify the request. • Never send money based solely on a text or messaging app conversation. • Take time to think and don't be pressured into making quick decisions. • Speak to a trusted friend or family member if you're unsure.

If you receive a suspicious message, report it by forwarding the text to 7726 (free of charge) and then delete it.
