Water Safety at Chasewater

Water Safety Warning – Chasewater Reservoir

We are continuing to receive reports of children, youths, and adults entering the water and jumping into Chasewater Reservoir.

Whilst the warmer weather may make open water look appealing, entering the reservoir can be extremely dangerous and can have fatal consequences.

The Dangers of Open Water

⚠️ Water temperatures can be much colder than expected, even on warm days, causing cold water shock.
⚠️ Strong currents and sudden drop-offs can make it difficult to swim.
⚠️ Hidden hazards beneath the water, including debris, vegetation, and uneven surfaces, can cause injury or entrapment.
⚠️ Jumping from height can result in serious injuries due to unseen objects below the surface.
⚠️ Panic and exhaustion can occur quickly, even for strong swimmers.

What Parents and Guardians Can Do

✅ Speak to children and young people about the dangers of entering open water.
✅ Encourage them to stay with friends and make safe decisions.
✅ Report any concerns to the appropriate authorities.

In an Emergency

If you see someone in difficulty in the water:

📞 Call 999 immediately and ask for Fire and Rescue Service and Ambulance.
🚫 Do not enter the water yourself.
✅ If possible, throw something that floats and encourage the casualty to float on their back.

We ask all residents to help us spread this important safety message and discourage anyone from entering the water at Chasewater.
