Illegal and Off-Road Motorcycles

Over recent weeks, Staffordshire Police has received a number of reports relating to the antisocial use of illegal and off-road motorcycles in our local communities. We understand the frustration and concern these incidents cause residents, particularly when bikes are being ridden on footpaths, parks, open spaces and public roads in a dangerous manner.

We would like to reassure the public that Staffordshire Police is aware of the issue and is actively working to identify offenders and disrupt this behaviour. This is not only a local problem but a nationwide issue affecting communities across the country.

Residents often ask why police do not simply pursue riders when they are seen committing offences. Police pursuits are subject to strict national guidelines and risk assessments. Where riders are not wearing appropriate safety equipment, such as crash helmets, pursuing them can significantly increase the likelihood of serious injury or death should they fall from the motorcycle. The safety of all road users, members of the public and the rider themselves must be carefully considered before any pursuit is authorised.

Whilst this can understandably be frustrating, it does not mean that action is not being taken. Staffordshire Police uses a range of tactics to tackle illegal motorcycle use, including:

Gathering intelligence from the public.

Reviewing CCTV, doorbell camera and other video footage.

Conducting targeted patrols in identified hotspot areas.

Working with local authorities, partner agencies and landowners.

Identifying and seizing vehicles being used unlawfully where legislation permits.

Taking action against riders through summons, prosecutions and vehicle seizure operations.

We continue to build intelligence around those responsible and use information provided by the community to support enforcement activity.

How you can help?

If you witness illegal motorcycle use, please report it to us with as much information as possible, including:

Date, time and location.

Description of the motorcycle.

Description of the rider(s).

Direction of travel.

Any video, CCTV or doorbell footage available.

If the incident is occurring at the time and there is an immediate risk to public safety, please call 999. For non-emergency reports, contact us online or via 101.

Your reports help us identify patterns, target resources effectively and build evidence against repeat offenders.
