Public Awareness Message

We have received a report of males attending a residential property and claiming to be from HMRC in an attempt to gain entry to the address.

Please remain vigilant and take the following precautions:

Do not allow anyone into your home immediately, even if they claim to be from an official organisation.

Always ask to see identification and take time to examine it carefully.

Verify their identity independently by contacting the organisation they claim to represent using an official telephone number or website. Do not use contact details provided by the caller or visitor.

Be cautious of pressure tactics, such as being told that urgent action is required or that you must make a decision immediately.

Keep doors secured while speaking to unexpected visitors and consider using a door chain or speaking through the door.

If you are unsure, do not let them in and ask them to return once you have verified their credentials.

Never hand over cash, bank details or personal information to an unexpected visitor.

If possible, take note of descriptions, vehicle details, and registration numbers if you believe the caller may be suspicious.

HMRC staff will not normally make unannounced visits demanding immediate access, payment, or personal financial information. If you are concerned that someone is impersonating a government official or another trusted organisation, report the incident and make those around you aware, particularly elderly or vulnerable friends, family members, and neighbours.

In an emergency, always call 999. For non-emergency matters, contact the police on 101.
