#SlowDown | As we move into autumn, deer activity is expected to increase across the area, particularly on and around Cannock Chase.
During the rutting season, which typically begins in late September and continues through the autumn, deer become more active and can behave unpredictably as males compete for mates. This means there is an increased risk of deer suddenly entering roads, especially during dawn and dusk.
We are asking motorists to:
✅ Slow down when travelling through rural and wooded areas.
✅ Stay alert, particularly during the early morning and evening hours.
✅ Watch for deer warning signs and reduce your speed accordingly.
✅ Remember that deer often travel in groups, so if you see one, others may be nearby.
✅ Brake firmly if safe to do so, but avoid swerving into oncoming traffic or roadside hazards.
Collisions involving deer can cause serious damage to vehicles and injuries to drivers, passengers and the animals themselves.
If you're travelling through Cannock Chase or other rural areas in the coming weeks, please take a little extra care and allow yourself more time for your journey.
