Community Alert: Counterfeit Notes in Circulation |
||
|
We would like to make the community aware that a number of counterfeit bank notes have recently been identified and have been very kindly handed in to the police by an honest and upstanding member of the public. We would like to thank the individual for doing the right thing and reporting the matter, as this helps protect local businesses and residents from becoming victims of fraud. How to Spot a Counterfeit NoteGenuine Bank of England notes contain several security features which can help you identify if a note is genuine: ✅ Feel the note - Genuine polymer notes are made of plastic and feel smooth, crisp and durable. ✅ Check the see-through window - Genuine notes have a clear window with detailed features that are difficult to replicate. ✅ Look for the metallic hologram - The holographic image should change when the note is tilted. ✅ Examine the print quality - Counterfeit notes often have blurred text, poor-quality printing, or colours that appear faded. ✅ Check for raised print - Certain areas of genuine notes have raised ink which can be felt by touch. If you receive a note that you believe may be counterfeit, do not attempt to pass it on to somebody else. The Consequences of Using Counterfeit NotesUsing a counterfeit note to pay for goods or services, knowing or suspecting it is fake, is a criminal offence. Individuals found to be knowingly possessing, creating, distributing, or using counterfeit currency may face a criminal investigation, prosecution, and potentially a custodial sentence depending on the circumstances. What Should You Do?🔹 If you suspect you have been given a counterfeit note, keep it separate from genuine cash. 🔹 Make a note of where and when you received it, if possible. 🔹 Hand it in to your local police station or bank for examination. 🔹 Report any information regarding the sourcing or circulation of counterfeit notes to the police. By remaining vigilant and checking notes carefully, we can all help reduce the circulation of counterfeit currency and protect local businesses and residents. Thank you for your continued support in helping keep our communities safe. If you have any information regarding counterfeit notes being used locally, please contact Staffordshire Police via 101 or report information online. | ||
