Think Before You Discard Your Pumpkin This Autumn |
Over the next few weeks, many of us will have pumpkins that need to be thrown away following Halloween. While it may seem like a kind gesture to leave them in parks, woodlands or nature reserves for wildlife, this can actually do more harm than good. Discarded pumpkins can attract a wide range of animals, but they are not a natural food source for many species and can cause digestive problems, illness and changes to natural feeding behaviours. As pumpkins begin to rot, they can also encourage the growth of harmful moulds and bacteria that may affect wildlife. If you have leftover pumpkin, a better option is to place it on a raised bird table or feeding station in your garden for a short period, allowing birds and squirrels to benefit. However, please ensure it is removed before it becomes mouldy.
❌ Please do not leave pumpkins in parks, woodlands, open spaces or nature reserves. ✅ Dispose of pumpkins responsibly through garden waste, composting, or household food waste collections where available.
By making small changes, we can all help protect our local wildlife this autumn.
