🚨 Thinking of Buying an E-Scooter for Christmas? 🚨

With Christmas approaching, many people may be considering purchasing an e-scooter as a gift. Before you buy, it's important to understand the law surrounding their use.

Many e-scooters available online and in shops may appear to be a fun and practical gift. However, most privately owned e-scooters cannot legally be used on public roads, pavements, cycle paths, or in other public places.

If used illegally in public, a privately owned e-scooter could result in:

The e-scooter being seized by police.

A fixed penalty notice.

Penalty points on a driving licence.

Prosecution for offences such as having no insurance or driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Where can e-scooters be used?

✅ On private land, with the permission of the landowner.

✅ In areas operating approved rental e-scooter schemes, where they must be used in accordance with local rules.

⚠️ There are currently no approved rental e-scooter schemes in South Staffordshire.

Before spending your money this Christmas:

Check whether the rider will be able to use the e-scooter legally.

Consider alternative gifts such as bicycles, traditional scooters, or other outdoor equipment that can be used lawfully.

Speak to children and young people about the risks associated with e-scooters, particularly during the darker winter months.

Don't let a Christmas gift turn into an expensive mistake. Take a few minutes to do your research before buying and make sure you understand where e-scooters can and cannot be used.
